Texas Trust Foundation Awards $20,000 in Scholarships

ARLINGTON, Texas – May 23, 2022 – Two top graduates of the Arlington Independent School District have been awarded $10,000 scholarships from the Texas Trust Gives Foundation.

The Don and Lamanda Higginbotham Education Scholarship recipient is Maria Calzada from Arlington High School. Calzada ranked 23rd out of 598 in her class. She was active in the school symphony orchestra, Key Club, National Honor Society, Latinas in Progress, and ENGin. As part of ENGin she taught English to Ukrainian students. In the fall, Calzada will attend the University of Texas at Arlington to pursue a degree in early childhood education and psychology.

Sydney Hermance received the Lou Nabors Engineering Scholarship. Hermance, who ranked 54th in the 2022 class of James Martin High School, will pursue an engineering degree from Texas A&M. Her high school activities involved Girls Who Code, National Honor Society, and CyberStart.

Calzada and Hermance will each receive $2,500 annually for up to four years to go toward tuition. Both scholarships are in honor of past board members of Texas Trust Credit Union, founding organization of the Texas Trust Gives Foundation.

“We hope these scholarships will allow Maria and Sydney the opportunity to fulfill their purpose and potential,” said Washima Huq, Executive Director of the Texas Trust Gives Foundation. “They are both gifted students and the Foundation is honored to support them in the next phase of their learning.”
