City & County CU Launches Money on the Bookshelf to Promote Financial Literacy

At City & County Credit Union, we believe that it’s never too early to start saving and learning about important money topics. We are committed to offering free financial education for youth in our community and will be expanding these efforts in the West Metro by launching Money on the Bookshelf at the Brooklyn Park and Minnetonka branch.

Money on the Bookshelf, a free financial literacy program for youth aged 4 – 14, was inspired and guided by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension program. Money on the Bookshelf encourages financial literacy in youth, as children learn about the basics of money, such as opening an account, earning an allowance, and saving, through reading.

Youth are encouraged to read five books from the bookshelf and talk with their parents about what they learned. Each book is labeled with reading level and themes found in the book to inspire communication between parents and their child. After reading five books, youth earn a $5 CCCU Coupon that can be deposited into a savings account or used to purchase CCCU prizes.

City & County Credit Union received a grant from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation that funded the Money on the Bookshelf Program at Brooklyn Park and Minnetonka.

“We are extremely excited to launch Money on the Bookshelf in Brooklyn Park and Minnetonka! This program was inspired by our goal to improve financial literacy in our community.” Bailey Germain, VP of Marketing explained. “With help from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation, we were able to not only achieve our goal, but also inspire youth in the West Metro to read and create positive money habits at an early age.”

Money on the Bookshelf is funded in part by a grant from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation. Curriculum was inspired and guided by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension program.
