America First CU Helps Students Take a "Bite of Reality" at Financial Literacy Event

Las Vegas, Nev. (March 7, 2018) – America First Credit Union participated in the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation’s “Bite of Reality” event on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The event, which took place at Sports Leadership and Management Academy, provided students real world simulation guiding them through a day in the life of an adult. America First, the sixth largest credit union in the nation, was joined by other members of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Nevada Credit Union League.

Bite of Reality is a hands-on simulation for teens that gives them the opportunity to get a feel for real-world financial scenarios. The students were given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt and medical insurance payments, and are then told to visit several stations to “purchase” housing, transportation, food, household necessities, and many other needs. There are even unforeseen expenses and expenditures that are presented because, just as in reality, there are always unpredictable occurrences. Fortunately, the game also includes a credit union to help them finance all needs.

This interactive activity teaches students how to make financial decisions and give them a better understanding of the challenges of living on a budget. Volunteers from America First included Deborah Murphy, Niel Montemayor and Shannon Dalton. Other local credit unions like Clark County Credit Union, InTouch Credit Union, Boulder Dam Credit Union and Silver State Schools Credit Union participated and came together with the goal of promoting financial literacy and helping young adults develop healthy spending habits.
