Greater Nevada CU Teaches Financial Management to 150 Teens at "Dream It Be It" Event

(Elko, Nev.) April 12, 2018 Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU) staff introduced more than 150 teen girls to the basics of financial management at the Soroptomist International of Elko “Dream It Be It” event held April 4.  The event provides secondary school-age girls access to professional role models, career education, and the resources to gain knowledge and life skills for success.

During the event, GNCU Member Services Supervisor Chris Winberg and GNCU Elko Branch Member Services Representative Tasha Storla utilized the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation’s Bite of Reality curriculum to give participants a real-life simulation of income, expenses and budgeting.

"I think financial literacy is important to every individual," Storla said.  "During the event the students received a clear breakdown of how to budget and how to avoid excessive debt. Plus they gained better insight into real life scenarios. One of the expenses that shocked them most was the cost of food!"

Winberg added: "This was a great opportunity to enlighten young women on what to expect after high school. The most common response I heard was 'Kids are so expensive.’ “

GNCU provides financial literacy throughout its communities and recently received the Editor's Choice Award™ from BadCredit.org for its commitment to financial education through proactive outreach.  For more information about Greater Nevada Credit Union, visit gncu.org.
