Security Service Charitable Foundation Donates $5,000 to Thru Project to Help Youth

SAN ANTONIO, TX – January 11, 2019– Security Service Charitable Foundation has donated $5,000 to THRU Project, a mentoring program for youth in the San Antonio area who have aged out of the foster care system. This donation will go specifically towards helping youth attend life skills workshops and events in the form of ride share services. Attendance at these workshops is vital to the continued growth and support of foster and former foster youth, assisting them with transitioning into adulthood successfully.

“Transportation to life skills workshops is a critical component for the work we do,” said Elaine Andries Hartle, CEO for THRU Project. “Security Service’s generosity will provide more youth the opportunity to have access to workshops which teach them about real-life topics such as credit matters, finance literacy and job skills to help them be successful in the world.”

Many of the programs available to foster youth can be difficult to navigate and so, without help, many youth aging out of foster care face life unprepared for what lies ahead. Having just one trusted, dependable adult mentor to help guide and support them during this critical time can promote a path of success and independence.

In addition to mentoring, THRU Project provides semester bus passes, emergency or job-related funding, cell phone service, life-skills workshops and housing, working with private and state agencies to create a network of services vital to the success of area foster youth. They accomplish these goals with the help of their staff, board members and 300+ volunteers. Currently, THRU Project serves 117 youth in San Antonio and the surrounding area.

“Security Service is honored to donate funds to the THRU Project to assist them in their mission of helping foster children transition to an independent life,” said Tom Martin, board member for THRU Project and executive vice president/chief financial officer for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “The guidance, support and advocacy THRU Project provides helps set foster youth on a positive path to having a successful life after foster care.”
