(SAN ANTONIO, TX - JANUARY 30, 2019) –– The Security Service Charitable Foundation has presented The Battered Women and Children’s Shelter with $5,000 to purchase new kitchen equipment for meal preparation.

Since 1977, The Battered Women and Children’s Shelter has been working to strengthen families and break the cycle of violence. These goals are attained through providing emergency shelter, transitional housing, education, legal services, effective parenting education, and specialized intervention with youth and the elderly.

Serving Bexar County and the surrounding area, The Battered Women and Children’s Shelter currently houses over 185 women and children. Their Family Violence Prevention Services (FVPS) has assisted some 9,200 mothers and children agency wide.

“Donations like this one from Security Service Federal Credit Union are allowing us to continue providing a safe place for women and children who are escaping abuse,” said Marta Prada Pelaez, president and CEO for The Battered Women and Children’s Shelter. “Due to this, we are able to provide critical components to meet daily needs like a safe house and a working kitchen to prepare meals. Each component is so important for healing. Last year alone, 136,000 meals were served at this shelter.”

“For more than 40 years, The Battered Women and Children’s Shelter has done an exceptional job caring for victims and breaking the cycle of violence,” said Mark Jimenez, vice president of enterprise solution analysis & design for Security Service Federal Credit Union and shelter board member. “This is a critical component in creating healthy communities and we are honored Security Service’s donation will have an impact on families in need.”

FVPS provides the following services to victims of domestic violence: 24-hour crisis hotline, shelter with meals, comprehensive case management, children's program, individual counseling, emergency food and clothing, legal advocacy and referral, primary medical and dental, parent education program and many more services.

The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union's market areas.
