Dow Chemical Employees CU Collects Nearly 4,000 Items for Local Food Pantries

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, February 27, 2019 – For the second consecutive year, individuals and families in Bay, Midland, Saginaw and Gladwin counties are benefiting from a donation drive at Dow Chemical Employees’ Credit Union in partnership with Hidden Harvest. During January and February, DCECU collected food and personal care items to be divided among organizations that distribute resources to community members.

In all, close to 4,000 items were collected, including almost 2,400 food items and approximately 1,400 personal care items. This included contributed items as well as items purchased with a $600 donation from Garber Chevrolet in Midland.

Saginaw-based nonprofit Hidden Harvest provided DCECU with boxes for the collection of items. At the conclusion of the donation drive, Hidden Harvest retrieved the donations from DCECU for transport to Good Samaritan Rescue Mission in Bay City and the Ecumenical Food Pantry in Saginaw. DCECU employees hand-delivered items to Midland’s Open Door and to Helping Hands Mission in Beaverton. The four organizations will distribute the items to community members.

Each week of the five-week drive featured specific items that were being sought for donation, but all donations were welcomed. Collected canned food items included green beans, baked beans, corn, soups, stews and meats. Personal care items collected included shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, toothbrushes and deodorant.

“In this second annual beginning-of-the-year donation drive to help local families keep food on the table and personal-care necessities in the bathroom cabinet, we were once again amazed by the generosity of our members, our employees and the public,” said DCECU Executive Assistant to the CEO Susan Phillips, who started the drive in 2018 and organized it again this year. “It felt wonderful to load up that Hidden Harvest truck with thousands of items and the knowledge that so many people in the area will benefit from the community’s giving spirit.”
