Municipal Credit Union Awards $71,000 in Scholarships to High School Seniors

NEW YORK CITY  – Municipal Credit Union (MCU) has awarded $71,000 in scholarships to college-bound graduating high school seniors: nine memorial scholarship grants of $5,000 each and 13 grants of $2,000 each.

The recipients of the 2019 MCU Memorial Scholarships are Alex Charkowick, Isaiah Elysee, Leila Gomez, Ryan Kim, Michael Ott, Devin McCarthy, Kristen Palmer, Imera Reyes, and Andrea Roy.

“We’re proud to congratulate our 2019 MCU Scholarship Winners,” said MCU Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations Louise Cogan-Rupani, who served as this year’s Scholarship Program Director. “These impressive young people have demonstrated a tremendous commitment to higher learning, leadership, and community service. These scholarships not only acknowledge what they have accomplished so far, but will help them thrive in the next steps of their unique journeys.”

With the help of the New York Credit Union Association, the 2019 MCU Scholarship Winners were selected from a competitive pool of more than 350 applications. Applicants were evaluated on academic performance, extracurricular activities, community service and involvement, letters of recommendation, and an essay expressing personal goals.

The annual MCU Scholarship Program is part of the credit union’s long-standing corporate commitment to youth education across the greater New York City area. Since its inception 24 years ago, the program has awarded nearly $1 million to graduating high school seniors.

Eligibility for the 2019 MCU Scholarship Program was open to an MCU member, a child, or a grandchild of a member in good standing.
