Security Service Charitable Foundation Donates $3,000 to Local Boys & Girls Club

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Security Service Federal Credit Union Charitable Foundation is helping at-risk youth become successful readers through a $3,000 donation to The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio’s (BGCSA) Power Hour Reading Program. This program was developed in direct response to poor reading performance among BGCSA’s target population; which is minority and economically disadvantaged children. The donation will provide supplies for The Power Hour Reading Program, including books and reporting materials.

“At the clubs, we see the struggles low-income youth face with reading every day,” said Angie Mock, CEO for The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio. “The Security Service Charitable Foundation donation is allowing us to make a positive impact, giving at-risk youth the tools they need to succeed.”

The Power Hour Reading Program is critical as the Texas Education Agency reports passing rates for third graders in this sector of the community have been on a downward trend since 2013, and remain consistently lower than county and state percentages for all students.

“This program is helping disadvantaged children succeed by bridging learning gaps and keeping youth engaged in academics,” said Michael Cubeta, senior vice president of legal services for Security Service Federal Credit Union and board member for The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio.

BGCSA has served the youth in San Antonio for almost 80 years. Through after school, summer and holiday programs, they care for 8,500 at-risk youth. Children range in age from six to 18 and receive community services at six clubhouse locations throughout San Antonio. Programs concentrate on three priority outcomes: academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character and citizenship. The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union's market areas.
