Vandalia, Ohio — Abbey Credit Union will end up helping 50 families in the Dayton area up to $250 per household for insurance deductible or home repair gift cards following the devastating Memorial Day tornadoes that have caused insured losses between $465 million and $480 million, according to the Ohio Insurance Institute, based on surveys of insurers.

According to the OII, more than 30,000 claims have been filed for the storms that hit Ohio between May 27 and 28. Dayton was hardest hit with the storms that reached wind speeds of 170 mph and spawned 19 tornadoes.

"It’s truly members helping members,” said Blanca Ortiz, VP of Community Development at Abbey CU. “It’s the mission of credit unions in action—we take care of each other and our communities. That’s the credit union way.”

Most of the money provided by Abbey Credit Union was received as grant from the Ohio Credit Union Foundation. The Foundation raises money at several events throughout the year with its member credit unions and then redistributes that money as grants through the Foundation.
