Northland Area FCU Helps Provide Financial Education for Veterans

Alpena, MI - September 2019 – Northland Area Federal Credit Union recently teamed up with North East Michigan Community Service Agency (NEMSCA), United Way of Alpena and Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary to sponsor a Veteran’s Coffee hour. At the “Scams, Schemes, and Fraud” presentation Veterans received information on the latest scams and fraud tactics to be aware of. “Besides the recent regular scams out there targeting members, we were able to also have a discussion about which cons were targeting military personnel and veterans specifically” said Matt Duthler, Northland’s Marketing Director.

One other portion of the presentation was how Payday Lending offices often set up near military bases, and the negative impact that has on U.S. troops; in some cases causing loss of security clearances for soldiers.  Northland teamed up with the afore mentioned organizations in Alpena and sponsored the breakfast portion to the regular monthly coffee hour; which also helped attract new attendees to the regular Veteran’s coffee hour. “Northland is proud to be able to be part of financial education like this in our communities” Northland’s CEO Pete Dzuris said; who was also at the event.
