Del Norte Credit Union Celebrates International Credit Union Day by Giving Back

Espaola, New Mexico, on October 17, 2019— Credit union members around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day®, an annual event to commemorate the credit union movement’s impact and achievements. This year marks the 71st anniversary. In honor of this special day, Del Norte Credit Union invites its staff, members and the entire community to join us in cleaning up the Valdez Park at 720 Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park Rd. in Espaola. A designated DNCU team will be out at the park from 10am to 3pm continuing the annual park cleanup since adopting Valdez Park in 2015. The City of Espanola will also be providing team members to support this effort throughout the day.

Valdez Park was named after Vietnam hero Petty Officer Phil Valdez, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic actions in saving the lives of two Marines while under fire. The park also commemorates Venessa Valerio, an Espanola resident who lost her life at a very young age as the result of a crime. Del Norte Credit Union staff chose to adopt Valdez Park and revitalize it to create a safe, clean, and secure recreational area for the community.

“Our philanthropic efforts are focused on improving the lives of the youth of Northern New Mexico, and we know that this project goes a long way to shape the future of tomorrow, and helps instill pride in the community,” stated Chuck Valenti, DNCU CEO/President.

In addition to the park cleanup, Del Norte Credit Union (DNCU) will be offering apples at all six locations throughout northern NM in recognition of International Credit Union Day.

Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union and financial cooperative difference. This year’s theme is “Local Service. Global Reach.” It speaks to how each credit union serves a local community—and it is because of that local service in communities across the world that we have a global credit union movement that’s now 260 million members strong. ICU Day 2019 is a celebration of the impact credit unions and other financial cooperatives have made—and continue to make for their members. It is also a chance to be thankful for the lives and communities that have been improved by our movement.
