PSECU Awards $48,000 in Scholarships for Postsecondary Education

Harrisburg, PA (April 30, 2020) – Pennsylvania’s largest credit union, PSECU, announced today the  winners of its 24th annual scholarship program. Each year, the program awards six scholarships - valued up to $8,000 each for a total of $48,000 - to graduating high school seniors to help reduce the financial burden of pursuing postsecondary education. Winners are selected based on their academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and critical thinking and writing skills.

“Education is a pillar of our community outreach at PSECU. From providing financial education resources through our WalletWorks program and new Online Learning Center, to offering scholarships for students to pursue their dreams through college, we understand the importance of education in obtaining financial success,” said PSECU Consumer Education Strategist Sara Weiser, who oversees the credit union’s scholarship program. “Since we started our scholarship program in 1997, we’ve disbursed more than $686,000 in scholarships to 137 students. That is something we’re very proud of because we know that it has helped young students find opportunity, reach their goals, and prepare for the future.”

Of the 495 applications PSECU received through its online application process this year, the following winners were selected (alphabetical order by last name):

  • Charley Baker, Susquenita High School, Duncannon, PA. Michael A. Gottshall Memorial Scholarship recipient.

  • Claire Diperna, State College Area High School, State College, PA.

  • Matthew Gurgiolo, Camp Hill High School, Camp Hill, PA.

  • Adrienne Keener, Springfield High School, Springfield, PA.

  • Maya Lee, Great Mills High School, Great Mills, MD. John J. Marisic Memorial Scholarship recipient.

  • Luke Wilson, Bald Eagle Area High School, Wingate, PA.

As long as scholarship requirements, including maintaining a minimum GPA, are met, each winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship per year that is renewable for up to four years, for a total scholarship value of $8,000 per student.

Opened in 1934, PSECU was founded by 22 ordinary people who pooled $90 and made an extraordinary commitment to each other: To create a financial institution where collective resources benefit all members. Today, PSECU continues that legacy as a leading full-service credit union managing more than $6 billion in assets and offering its over 450,000 members convenient anytime, anywhere digital banking options. PSECU was named a 2019 Best-In-State Credit Union by Forbes Magazine and a Best Credit Union of 2020 by GOBankingRates. For more information about PSECU, visit psecu.com.
