Affinity Plus Federal CU Donates Over $300,000 to Local Organizations

ST PAUL, MN (July 23, 2020) — In the wake of George Floyd’s death and the unrest that followed, Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union (Affinity Plus) organized two fundraising initiatives: Twin Cities Healing and Affinity Plus Gives. Together, credit union members and employees directed more than $330,000 to an array of organizations making a difference in their communities by addressing racial injustice, supporting rebuilding efforts and providing basic needs in the most impacted communities.

”We were so pleased by the passionate outpouring of support from our members for this initiative,” said Adam Layne, Senior Community Engagement Specialist, Affinity Plus. “We know the needs of the community are at an all-time high right now and we’re thankful to be in a position to work alongside our members and employees and give
back in a meaningful way.”

Twin Cities Healing Created by the Affinity Plus Foundation, Twin Cities Healing coordinates contributions to various certified 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations working to meet the basic needs of impacted individuals, rebuild communities, and address racial injustice. Our members gave back in a big way, by donating more than $36,000 in monetary and MyPlus Rewards points. To celebrate the generosity of members, Affinity Plus contributed an additional $100,000, bringing the contribution to more than $136,000. From July 1-10, members cast their votes to allocate the funds among 10 organizations.

Affinity Plus Gives In addition to Twin Cities Healing, Affinity Plus launched an employee-directed initiative, in which they nominated organizations that are helping local communities. In total, $200,000 was gifted to 26 organizations across the state and nationally.

“We are grateful to Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union and its members for its support for our work. We are excited to see what we can do together as we work to help our community heal, rebuild, and advance reforms to make us a more just, equitable, and healthy Twin Cities,” said Kari Clark, Chief Development Officer, YWCA Minneapolis. “Funds from Affinity Plus Credit Union support our efforts to create lasting change in our community.”

“In the coming months, we anticipate even more people turning to us for food, crisis support, and connection to resources,” said Mary McKeown, President and CEO, Keystone Community Services. “This incredible generous contribution from Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union and its members gives us the greatest flexibility to respond to rapidly evolving needs in our community. We are sincerely thankful for your partnership in supporting people in our community!”

In addition to monetary donations to various organizations, three of our branches (Roseville, Lafayette and University), also served as drop-off sites for much needed items. Roughly $5,000 worth of donations were collected including: non-perishable food, diapers, baby formula, hygiene products. The team dropped off donations at The
Sheridan Story, who will distribute the items to emergency food depots across the Twin Cities.
