San Diego County CU Extends "Stuff the Bus" School Supply Drive

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (August 5, 2020) – So far, SDCCU Stuff the Bus has collected $82,000 to help provide school supplies for students experiencing homelessness, and the Danna Foundation has agreed to match any additional donations made now through August 31, up to $20,000. This is the sixth year in a row that San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®) has partnered with the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and iHeartMedia radio stations in support of Live Well San Diego to raise funds for students in need. The fundraiser kicked off July 1, but because of the increased need this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and so many families facing financial hardship, the campaign has been extended through August 31.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of those in our community who have already donated to SDCCU Stuff the Bus. It’s impressive that we are nearly halfway to our goal, and we are excited to extend the fundraiser to enable more to donate to help lighten the load for these children currently experiencing homelessness,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO. “We want to extend our thanks to the Danna Foundation as well for their offer to match donations up to $20,000 for this incredibly important cause.”

More than 22,000 school-age children were identified as homeless during the last school year. Homelessness for school-age children can mean living in a shelter, sharing a residence with multiple families, living in a car or trailer in San Diego County or sharing a room in an apartment with relatives. Homelessness is not limited to urban, downtown San Diego—it affects suburban school districts all over the county. It’s also important to note that whether students are learning in or out of the classroom, the still need supplies. When students are learning out of the classroom, the need is often greater since they can’t share supplies with a classmate or be given supplies from their teacher.

Monetary donations will be accepted online now through August 31. Donations are also accepted online at iHeartMedia San Diego radio stations Star 94.1, Channel 93.3, JAM’N 95.7 and KOGO AM 600 through August 31. For more information or to donate online, visit sdccu.com/donate.
