Hilo, HI (November 28, 2025) – Caring for the growing needs of kūpuna on Hawai’i Island is an honor that comes with increasing financial challenges for many. HFS Federal Credit Union realizes the need and has embraced its promise to be a place where caring counts.
Throughout October, monetary donations were collected at 6 branch locations to benefit Hawai’i Island Adult Care (HIAC), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide ‘ohana with high-quality adult daycare and caregiver services to support aging in place. The funds collected will support HIAC’s Kūpuna in Need program, helping to subsidize services for community members who need extra assistance.
Members of the credit union, as well as individuals from the community, generously contributed to the fundraiser. HFS FCU’s President-CEO, Nathan Abe, shares:
“We are thrilled to announce a successful fundraising campaign for Hawai’i Island Adult Care. With the generous hearts of our valued members and the dedicated efforts of our exceptional employees, an impressive $25,020 was raised. The commitment shown by everyone involved is a powerful testament to our shared belief in supporting the vital work HIAC does every day to provide compassionate care and essential services to our island’s kūpuna and their families. We would like to thank everyone who supported this campaign for making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
A $25,020 check was presented to Hawai’i Island Adult Care.
"We are extremely grateful for the generosity and partnership with HFS Federal Credit Union. They live out their motto of "where caring counts," and we are so grateful to be part of their annual fundraiser. This support helps us continue to serve our caregivers and our kūpuna of Hawai’i County. All funds donated will go directly to our Kūpuna in Need program, which provides direct financial support to those who cannot afford to pay the full cost to attend HIAC out of pocket at the level or regularity needed. We deeply appreciate HFS and its ongoing commitment to supporting local nonprofits like ours. Mahalo for your support!" -Andrea Wernli, Executive Director

Established by just nine individuals in 1937, HFS started with very humble beginnings. The Credit Union continued to grow from serving only employees of the Federal and Territorial Governments in the County of Hawai‘i and their families to now offering membership to any person who lives, works, or attends school on Hawai’i Island.
