The PUENTE program at Fresno City College supports first-generation college students as they prepare to transfer to four-year universities, earn their degrees, and return as leaders in their communities. The program offers academic counseling, transfer support, tutoring, and a strong peer network to help students reach their goals.
EECU hosted a workshop for program participants on April 22 focused on helping the students understand how credit works, why it matters, and how to build and maintain a strong credit profile as they begin their financial journeys. Topics included establishing credit, managing debt responsibly, and avoiding common pitfalls that can impact long-term financial health and career opportunities.
“Financial education is especially important for PUENTE students because many come from low-income families where money is limited and they often have little exposure to what financial wellness really means,” said Erendida Barajas, Fresno City College PUENTE program counselor. “Partnerships with organizations like EECU enhance the support we provide by bringing in expertise and real-world knowledge that complements our counseling work.”
The session was led by EECU’s Member Education Director Noemi Valenzuela, who shared real-world examples and strategies students can apply immediately.
“Understanding credit is one of the most important steps in building financial stability,” Valenzuela said. “We want students to leave feeling empowered and equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions, whether they’re opening their first credit account or planning for future goals like renting an apartment or buying a car.”
EECU continues to partner with local schools and colleges to provide free financial education resources that support students and families across the communities it serves. To learn more about EECU’s financial wellness education or community initiatives, visit myEECU.org.
