RTN Federal Credit Union Awards $10,000 in Scholarships

Waltham, MA—RTN Federal Credit Union has announced the 2021 recipients of its James A. Burley, Jr. Scholarship Awards. The scholarship awards totaling $10,000 are presented annually to three students who are RTN members or dependents of members, and are enrolled in an undergraduate or post-high school technical college.

Lily Shaughnessy (also a 2020 winner) received the top award of $5,000. She is currently a student at Quinnipiac University. Julia Terra-Salomão earned $3,000 as the second-place award recipient. She is a student at Brown University. Kimberly-Ann Lang took home a third-place award of $2,000 and she will be attending Worcester State University in the fall.

The annual award is named in honor of RTN’s late Chairman and Director James A. Burley, Jr., who served the Credit Union for more than 30 years. Scholarship recipients are selected based on an essay. This year’s topic was “Describe how COVID-19 has impacted your education and social life.”

“The Burley Scholarship reflects our investment in the next generation of Credit Union members,” said Richard Wright, RTN Treasurer and CEO. “As the COVID-19 pandemic has created additional challenges for students and families, RTN is proud to play a role in helping to make higher education more financially accessible for our member families.”

RTN is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative committed to helping members achieve financial well-being through quality products and personalized service. Founded in 1945, RTN is one of the largest credit unions in Massachusetts, with over $1 billion in assets, nearly 50,000 members and 18 branches. RTN Federal Credit Union serves more than 1,100 sponsor groups including two major employers in Massachusetts – Raytheon Technologies and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
