DCECU Collected 2,600 Items for Four Local Pantries

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, February 8, 2018 – Families in Bay, Midland, Saginaw and Gladwin counties will get a bit of a boost this winter thanks to a recent donation drive at Dow Chemical Employees’ Credit Union (dcecu.org) in partnership with Hidden Harvest. Throughout the month of January, DCECU collected food and personal care items to be divided among organizations that distribute resources to community members.

In all, more than 2,000 food items and more than 600 toiletry items were collected. This included contributed items as well as items purchased with a $500 cash donation from Garber Chevrolet in Midland. The estimated total value of the more than 2,600 items exceeded $5,500.

Saginaw-based nonprofit Hidden Harvest provided DCECU with boxes for the collection of items. At the conclusion of the donation drive, Hidden Harvest retrieved the donations from DCECU for transport to Midland’s Open Door, Good Samaritan Rescue Mission in Bay City and the Ecumenical Food Pantry in Saginaw, which will distribute the items to community members. Meanwhile, DCECU representatives handled delivery of items designated for the Gladwin County Baby Pantry in Beaverton.

Each week of the monthlong drive featured specific items that were being sought for donation, but all donations were welcomed. Collected canned food items included green beans, baked beans, corn, soups, stews and meats. Toiletries collected included shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, toothbrushes and deodorant.

“We were all just blown away by the generosity of our members, our employees and the community at large,” said DCECU Executive Assistant to the CEO Susan Phillips, who organized the drive. “The donations just kept pouring in throughout the entire five weeks, and now four great local organizations will benefit tremendously as they carry out their respective missions in serving the community.”
