Educational Systems FCU Sponsors Spelling Bee for Local Students

April 23, 2018 (Greenbelt, MD) -- Educational Systems Federal Credit Union recently sponsored the spelling bees held in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and Prince George's counties.  Elementary and middle school students competed at the county level for a chance to receive a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Congratulations to the following winners:

  • Isabel Messina: In the 24th round, Isabel won the Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee by spelling the word Fomorian. In Irish mythology, it's a supernatural race of beings that come from the sea and underground. Isabel is an eighth-grader at Wiley H. Bates Middle School.

  • Sadie Storm:  In the 14th round, Sadie won the Calvert County Spelling Bee by spelling the word Vamplate, which is a round plate of iron mounted on the shaft of a lance or tilting spear to protect the hand. Sadie is an eighth-grader at Plum Point Middle School.

  • Emily Winkler: In the ninth round, Emily won the Charles County Spelling Bee by spelling the word Rembrandt, which is a shade of dark greyish brown that also shares the name of the 16th century Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Emily is an eighth-grader at Milton M. Somers Middle School.

  • Kayden Wilkins: In the eighth round, Kayden won the Prince George's County Spelling Bee by spelling the word Cambio, which means a money exchange especially in a Latin country. Kayden is a fifth-grader at Melwood Elementary School.

"Congratulations to Isabel, Sadie, Emily and Kayden," said Chris Conway, President/CEO of Educational Systems Federal Credit Union. "For us, it's an honor to Support Education and to sponsor spelling bees.  Educational Systems FCU wishes you the very best at the National Spelling Bee."

The Credit Union presented each winner with a gift basket including a $500 Visa® gift card to help defray the student's expenses while attending the national competition, which takes place from May 27 to June 1 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.  The finals will be on May 31.

Educational Systems FCU (esfcu.org) has proudly served the education community for over 60 years. With $950 million in assets and 12 branches, the Credit Union serves 87,000 members in seven school systems and three community colleges throughout Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George's, St. Mary's and Talbot counties.
