Mississippi Credit Unions Support Food Initiative Amid COVID-19

Jackson, Miss. - June 1, 2020 - The Credit Unions of Mississippi have joined together to partner with Partners in Education and Jackson Public Schools Child Nutrition to sponsor nutritional meals for JPS scholars and families during the COVID-19 crisis. This support helps JPS children to receive well-balanced, nutritious meals and fresh locally grown produce. The Credit Unions of Mississippi have contributed $15,500 to the program. To date, the JPS Food Distribution Plan has received a total of $85,857 in donations providing 12,000 hot meals and 2,250 packages of fresh produce.

“The Credit Unions of Mississippi are elated to partner with Partners in Education and JPS Child Nutrition on this initiative,” said Angela Mitchell, Vice President of Marketing at Members Exchange Credit Union. “We recognize the need our community has to provide food for their families during this difficult time. We are grateful to help fulfill this need by providing hot meals for JPS students and their families.”

Participating credit unions included Century First Federal Credit Union, Eagle Express Federal Credit Union, Jackson Area Federal Credit Union, Keesler Federal Credit Union, Magnolia Federal Credit Union, Members Exchange Credit Union, Mississippi Federal Credit Union, MS DHS Federal Credit Union, and Rivertrust Federal Credit Union.

“We are so very grateful to you for your leadership on this project, and to each donor organization,” wrote Thea T. Faulkner, Director of Partners in Education, Jackson Public Schools, in an email.  “This is truly a blessing for our community partners to support our scholars and their families during such a difficult time!”

The hot meal initiative aims to provide well-balanced, nutritious meals, and fresh locally grown produce to JPS families. It is in addition to the Grab-and-Go breakfast and lunch meals being distributed Mondays and Wednesdays by the JPS Child Nutrition team. For more information about how individuals or businesses can support these food distribution programs, please contact JPS Partners in Education at 601-960-8905.

Credit unions are financial cooperatives that provide financial products and services. Find a credit union at yourmoneyfurther.com/cu-finder or mscua.com.  Money is safe with Mississippi credit unions, and accounts are fully insured by the National Credit Union Administration, a government agency, up to $250,000.
