San Diego County CU Supports Live Well San Diego with Financial Wellness Presentations

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (November 3, 2020)--San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is proud to support Live Well San Diego as it celebrates its 10-year anniversary of creating healthy, safe and thriving communities. The goal of Live Well San Diego since its inception has been to improve the wellness for all residents living in San Diego County through five areas of influence: health, knowledge, standard of living, community and social.

In 2014, SDCCU was the first financial institution to be named a Live Well San Diego partner due to its commitment to improving the health and well-being of the community. This dedication to encouraging a safe, healthy and thriving San Diego is evident in numerous aspects of SDCCU’s community relations program. First, SDCCU Shred Day events have allowed members of the community to safely dispose of and recycle 4.5 million pounds of confidential documents, which has earned SDCCU and partners seven world record titles in the process.

SDCCU is the proud title sponsor of the SDCCU Holiday Bowl after sponsoring the SDCCU Poinsettia Bowl for 12 years until the last game was played in 2016. SDCCU is the nation’s only credit union to sponsor a college football bowl game among all of the college bowl games. That’s because the SDCCU Holiday Bowl is more than just a football game; it’s an opportunity for SDCCU to help its hometown thrive. The game is a holiday tradition in San Diego, it gives back to a charitable cause, generates tourism and tax dollars, creates memorable experiences and makes a powerful impact on the local economy.

Since their inceptions, the SDCCU Poinsettia and Holiday bowl games have driven a combined $1 billion into the local economy, impacting thousands of lives.

As part of the Live Well San Diego initiative, SDCCU is committed to supporting our local teachers and students. The annual SDCCU Stuff the Bus campaign has collected 1.2 million school supplies in total for the more than 22,000 homeless students in the County. In its six years, the fundraiser allowed SDCCU and the San Diego County Office of Education to stuff 31,932 backpacks with school supplies. In 2020, the program also provided 24,000 facemasks and nearly 3,700 listening devices to send students back to school with the tools needed to learn, fulfilling all requests and going to 32 school districts and 26 charter schools in the County. Additionally, over 350 Biz Kid$ kits have been distributed to local teachers in an effort to assist them in teaching students about money and business by introducing concepts of financial literacy and entrepreneurship into the classroom. The program is based on national standards for financial literacy and entrepreneurship education, and has been mapped to local and state standards.

Most notably, and aligning with all five of Live Well San Diego’s areas of influence, SDCCU has delivered nearly 700 financial wellness presentations to more than 10,000 attendees through its Financial Wellness Wednesdays. SDCCU’s Financial Wellness Wednesdays is an ongoing program hosted by SDCCU to help provide the community access to free financial wellness information. “SDCCU is thrilled to continue our support as a Live Well San Diego partner as it celebrates 10 years of creating healthy, safe and thriving communities,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Campbell. “We know that financial health is linked to physical health and as the first financial institution to be designated a Live Well San Diego partner, we strive to help individuals make educated decisions by offering some of the BEST financial products, services and education to our community.”

As a not-for-profit organization rooted in helping others, SDCCU is a long-time supporter of many different local non-profit organizations annually, including Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego Blood Bank, San Diego LGBT Pride and the San Diego Humane society, to name a few. At the local level, SDCCU’s more than 40 branch locations are actively involved in Chambers of Commerce and support charitable organizations and events through sponsorships and active volunteerism.

Live Well San Diego is the County of San Diego’s vision for a region that is Building Better Health, Living Safely and Thriving.
